Confessions of a Shopaholic

In Chick Flick, Comedy on March 21, 2009 at 8:01 am

shop1Chick flicks to me is what fine wine or expensive cars are too others, pure escapism and indulgence and this flick is a goody.

I just enjoyed every moment of the fashion voyeurism in this romantic comedy.  Isla Fisha plays Rebecca Bloomfield an extremely likable person who has an expensive addiction to shopping.  With her job ending suddenly she branches out to a new career where she finds success as a money adviser/ journalist.  Ironic! is how her friend and flatmate describes this development.

This movie is pure joy, just inhale the experience of shopping vicariously through her and soak in the laughs and the light romance.  My friends described the romance as cheesy, but who doesn’t love cheese!

He’s Just Not That Into You

In Chick Flick, Comedy on February 14, 2009 at 6:20 pm

hes-just-not-that-into-youThousands of women will flock to this movie with the aim of gaining some additional insight into their relationships.  Unfortunately they will find that this film offers nothing more than what is already widely available in your weekly women’s mag.

Having enjoyed so many movies where the women changes and wins the man ‘Grease, She’s all that’, I guess women-hood are at some level wanting to be told who they need to look like or be in order to meet ‘Prince Charming’ and find happiness.   Thankfully the message of this movie (if there ever was one) is that its just you baby.

Gigi (Goodwin) is adorable at representing the majority of women-kind and how they perceive love.  We watch her and her friend circle through various life situations. Read the rest of this entry »

Bride Wars

In Chick Flick, Comedy on January 26, 2009 at 7:28 am

bridewarsWhen they pair Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway, you know this is a chick flick you want to see.

Although the trailer tells you the main gist ‘two friends become enemies due to having their weddings on the same day’, it’s delightful and very funny.  There is even a couple of surprises at the end to make sure you leave feeling ‘chick flick happy’.

I really loved the fashions in this film.  As all who love chick flicks know a key element is always the ‘clothes lust’.

Whilst this film follows the tried and true ‘friendship’ – rom Comedy formula, its still a great watch and I enjoyed every minute of it.

Nights in Rodanthe

In Chick Flick on November 7, 2008 at 12:15 pm

nights-in-rodanthe1If you’re a women this flick is impossible to resist. It stars the ‘silver fox’ himself Richard Gere along with Diane Lane. This partnership is chick flick gold.

Diane Lane plays a woman recently separated from her husband. She offers to cover for her friend who has a quaint hotel on the waterfront in Rodanthe. Dr. Paul Flanner (Richard Gere) is the only guest. In the midst of a storm they find love and romance.

Sounds cheesey and unrealistic, but hey it’s a click flick,we’d want our money back if it was real life.

Wild Child

In Chick Flick on October 11, 2008 at 6:38 am

Lets face it.  When you see the trailer you know what the whole movie is going to be about.  But that doesn’t stop you for wanting to see it.  Movie makers know that they can re-wrap this old formula up every few years and us girls will go and see it!

This film is true to the formula, all the laughs, clothes and rebellion and is a good watch but save it for a rainy day when there is absolutely nothing else on.  Yes its one of those chick flicks!  You’re happy to watch it on a Sunday arvo on DVD but you wouldn’t pay to see it.

Steph’s rating: 6.5/10 (Don’t let the low rating foul you – its always good to have something like this when its raining outside and you’ve got nothing on – rating improves on that basis).

Then She Found Me

In Chick Flick on September 19, 2008 at 8:30 am

No qualms about it. The appeal of this film is Colin Firth. In this flick he continues to convey the Mr Darcy type hero that we have come to love and expect. There will be plenty of drooling from the lady fans.

Helen Hunt directs and produces this film about a lonely woman recently separated from her husband that is reunited with her birth mother. Although I like Helen Hunt (What Woman Want, Mad about You) in this film she comes across as drawn, not the exuberant woman we remember her as. However this is the character and we quickly become pulled into her life. Bette Midler is classic as the theatrical ‘newly found’ birth mother.

An enjoyable watch targeted at an older age group (think Somethings got to give).

Mamma Mia!

In Chick Flick, Comedy, Movies, Music on July 20, 2008 at 8:44 am

This movie is fun and frothy!

This musical does not take itself seriously at all… so its a wonderfully light-hearted and ‘giggly’ couple of hours. This film manages to suck you in that singing anywhere, anytime is as natural as breathing. Some of the best humour is just in the expressions of the cast as they sing and dance, it just leaves you in fits of laughter, at all the excitement and hilarity.

The audience will want to see this film because of Meryl Streep and Colin Firth and maybe a smigen of Pierce Brosnan. I was there for the ‘thinking girls heart-trob’ Colin Firth which in this musical they turned gay! (however not convincingly so – phew!!)

This movie is definitely a giggle and one to enjoy with your girl pals. I have not seen the live stage show, but I can imagine that it’s something quite special after seeing the film.

I’m also downloading ABBA songs as we speak!  So the music was delightful and the final scene not to be missed!

Sex and the City

In Chick Flick, Movies on June 8, 2008 at 8:23 am

A perfect outing with the girls.

I love that guys hate this movie so intensely especially since they are not the intended target market. This is a movie for women and women only. And how we loved and enjoyed it.

Maybe its just the girlie clothes, the close girl-friendships or again the clothes! But its a goodie. For many years I’d watched and loved the TV series and this movie did not disappoint. It was just as wonderful (although very sad in places).

Charlotte and Carrie are my favourite characters and i loved their storylines in this film. I don’t want to spoil the fun for any would-be viewers, but know you will laugh and cry!

I now look forward to it coming out on DVD to enjoy it all over again.

Warning: The sex scenes were more explicit that expected.

What Happens in Vegas

In Chick Flick, Comedy, Movies on May 11, 2008 at 9:09 am

Strangers meet in Vegas, enjoy a wild night, then wake up the next morning to find themselves married. Before they leave Vegas Jack (Kutcher) wins a 3 million Jackpot, then the battle for the money begins.

A light romantic comedy. Unfortunately the trailer shows many of the best laughs. The highlight of the film is the constant fighting/ battle between the leads. Similar but not as snappy as How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. Cameron Diaz is always delightful in this rom/com role and her film wardrobe is just sensational (a must for any chick flick lead actress). Dan in Real Life

In Chick Flick, Comedy, Movies on May 3, 2008 at 10:29 pm

Remember Chicken Soup for the Soul, those lovely stories that just made you feel all warm and gooey inside? Well Dan in Real Life is definitely a soul flick for the ladies. This movie has so many wonderful warm moments.

Steve Carell plays ‘Dan’ a likable but lonely widow and newspaper columnist, who takes his three daughters to a family gathering/ holiday in Rhode Island. The family casting is perfect and all roles large or small are interesting. The fun starts when Dan meets an intelligent beauty (Juliette Binoche), who then turns out to be his brothers new girlfriend!

There were so many hilarious scenes from the shower, to the bowling, aerobics, bar dancing – OK 90% of it. It was just great. I loved the family dynamics (reminded me very much of my own family) from the games, to the integration of new boyfriends/ girlfriends – to the ’special room’, the makeshift area (closet/laundry) that becomes a ’sleeping’ area when there are so many family members all in the house at one time. Also a very humorous cameo by Emily Blunt (Devil Wears Prada). Read the rest of this entry »

I get so excited about new chick flicks, that my expectations can rise sky high – then when the film is just OK I feel a little disappointed. But that’s just me! This film is definitely enjoyable and cute, but it was just OK. Read the rest of this entry »

Lars and the Real Girl

In Chick Flick, Comedy, Drama, Independant Film, Movies on April 26, 2008 at 9:56 pm

This movie is extremely quirky and heart warming. If you only see 1 movie this year – make sure its this one.

This film has already won 2 awards with 12 nominations. Ryan Gosling plays an extraordinary man whose wounded and isolated after losing his parents and has become frightened by human touch, consequently he leads a lonely and solitary life unable to communicate comfortably with others. That is until ‘Bianca’ arrives.

Bianca is a ‘doll’. His ‘relationship’ with her allows him to communicate and interact with his community.

Please don’t let any misconceptions deter you from seeing this film – it will be nothing like you expect and you’ll be thankful you did. Gosling is amazing in this Oscar worthy role. He conveys the innocence and the genuineness of this character beautifully. Read the rest of this entry »

Sydney White

In Chick Flick, Movies on April 24, 2008 at 6:16 pm

This is a lovely – modern ‘fairy tale’ for teens (and those of us who still feel like teens).

Loosely based on Snow White and Mean Girls this chick flick is delightfully watchable. Amanda Bynes plays ‘Sydney’ a like-able tomboy starting her first year of University (or College as the Americans say).

She doesn’t fit in with the petty and shallow sorority girls who soon reject her for being an individual. They embarrass her publicaly, kicking her out of the sorority house – leaving her to move in with 7 likable ‘dorks’. Like Snow White she eventually meets her Prince – the Uni President (Matt Long).

The movie is sweet and easy-going like Bratz last summer. It has a nice story and some good laughs. If you like chick flicks you with enjoy this sweet story. Read the rest of this entry »

2 Days in Paris

In Chick Flick, Comedy, Movies on April 21, 2008 at 8:40 pm

I liken this flick to a French version of ‘Lost in Translation’.

Marion (Julie Delpy) and Jack (Adam Goldberg) decide to spend two days with Marion’s parents in her childhood home in Paris before heading home to New York. The audience quickly become immersed in the French culture, from opinionated taxi-drivers to a ‘typical ?’ French family dynamic. All very opinionated and passionate (nothing PC here).

We soon learn that the French are very liberal – so there’s heaps of sexual innuendo and more. This film is very artsy has some good laughs – but just as foreign to a Kiwi as the Japanese culture – worlds apart.

Enjoyable 2hrs of light entertainment in Paris.

Factory Girl

In Chick Flick, On DVD on April 2, 2008 at 6:52 pm

fg.jpgWhen I hired out this DVD, I had already heard that the acting and the storyline was….say… very poor. It had already failed miserably at the Box Office and had gone straight to DVD almost everywhere. So why do you ask, did I want to hire and review this film? – the clothes baby – the clothes!

Before one half of you switch off, I liken a women’s passion for designer clothes to men’s obession with World War II Fighter planes or Classic Automobiles. There really is nothing quite like it… Let me quickly run through the ‘plot’ so we can get back to the clothes. Factory Girl is based on the true story of rich socialite and Andy Warhol’s muse, Edie Sedgwick. She was an ‘IT’ girl of the 60’s, similar to Nicole Richie or Lindsay Lohan today. Edie was famous for being rich, the people she was friends with and her unique sense of style. And what fabulous Style it was! Read the rest of this entry »

The Other Boleyn Girl

vm_sy140_sx100_-4.jpgSet in 15th century England the movie portrays the relationship between King Henry VIII who does not have a male heir and the two Boleyn daughters . The movie is full of romance, intrigue, and betrayal as the two sisters are driven by their families ambitions for power and status.

The Good

The movie flows well with plenty of atmosphere and the acting of the two sisters particularly Anne played by Natalie Portman was a highlight.

The Bad

A little investigation reveals big variances between the book, movie, and history, with the latter showing Mary as the older sister and little in common elsewhere. I thought Eric Bana was disappointing as Henry VIII. Read the rest of this entry »

27 Dresses

In Chick Flick, Movies, Recommended on February 9, 2008 at 8:36 pm

Katherine Heigl plays ‘Jane’ a hardworking, loyal person who finds herself always the bridesmaid and never the bride.

She has a longtime crush on her boss, but things are made complicated when her sister catches his eye.

I really enjoyed this movie. Katherine Heigl is adorable, her wardrobe stunning (not the bridesmaid dresses which are purposefully horrible). Follows the light, fluffy, feel good, chick plot to a tee. Loved it.

Jane Austen Book Club

In Chick Flick on January 28, 2008 at 4:05 am

Jane Austen Book Club is a nice flick but nothing on the Jane Austen Classic’s itself. I love all of Jane Austen’s novels and really wanted to see this movie.

It had good acting by an ensemble cast and I really liked the witty chit-chat. ‘Grigg and Jocelyn’ provided the most endearing storyline – the others being oh-hum.

Still a relaxing, enjoyable watch.

‘Enchanted’ still remains my fav Chick Flick of the year.

Steph’s rating: 9.5 !!! /10 This is a must see film

It had the right amount of cheese and humour to make it work! Somewhere in between a musical and a classic Walt Disney cartoon this film amuses and delights. The lead actress plays the role so well, you never doubt she is the cartoon heroine and Patrick Dempsey surprises as the divorce lawyer who’s life is thrown out of order when he meets her.

Definitely a standout movie in the Chick Flick, fairy tale genre.

The Nanny Diaries

Bratz

In Chick Flick on September 29, 2007 at 7:17 am

This is the surprise teen, girl flick of the year!

This movies plot, characters, fashion are so good – I suspect it will be as impacting on young girls as ‘Clueless’ or ‘She’s all That’ was nearly 10+ years ago. Unfortunately some reviews have described this film as the ‘most shallow, insignificant, poorly-directed, badly-acted movies of the year’ however it works! and the female pre-teen and teenage girls will love it.

It’s all about teen cliches and girl power. Go Bratz!

Because I Said So

In Chick Flick on August 5, 2007 at 2:00 am

Finally the first decent Chick Flick of 2007.

Diane Keaton, Mandy Moore, Lauren Graham are fabulous in it. It’s a totally girly movie (no man will cope – so I suggest you go it alone or take a girlfriend) and I totally loved every minute of it!

Diane Keaton is the lonely, controlling mum trying to wed off her last daughter Milly (Mandy Moore). It’s fabulous and funny to watch.

Of course, this movie, like all good chick flicks follows the tried and true formula, so there’s no surprises, and a really good watch – classic ahhhhh stuff.

If you’re looking for a really good romantic, feel good movie – this is it. (Click on pic to view trailer)

Paris, je T’aime

In Chick Flick on July 12, 2007 at 10:12 am

‘Like watching 18 Mentos commercials about Paris’ someone on IMDB placed this line and unfortunately I think it sums it up well.

It’s 18 modern love stories (shortfilms) by as many directors looking at different couples in Paris.

Plenty of wonderful actors, (Elijah Wood, Rufus Sewell (from The Holiday), Gerard Depardieu, Natalie Portman, Willem Dafoe, Nick Nolte, Maggie Gyllenhaal) however that’s not enough to save this film.

Paris Je T’Aime” lacks that special storyline that captures your interest that evolves – starts and has its conclusion (preferably happy). Really its just a mess and as of much interest as a ‘mentos’ or any other pointless commercial. The beautiful city of Paris I felt was not enough of a connecting factor to mesh the 18 short sketches together.

I hoped to fall in love with the City of Paris and the movie’s characters, but frankly I wouldn’t recommend it…(don’t waste your precious life!)

Nancy-Drew

In Chick Flick on July 7, 2007 at 5:21 am

Nancy Drew mysteries is a classic! and this film stays true to the intent and feel of the books.

This film hits its target of pre-teen, girls very well. So if you don’t feel twelve at heart anymore or if you’re not a parent of young teens, this movie probably wont excite you at all.

But all in all, I liked it. It was sweet. Nancy Drew is still the perfectest, heroine (that all young girls aspire to be like) and there even is a funny scene with Bruce Willis – go figure of all things!

Starter for 10

In Chick Flick on July 6, 2007 at 10:53 am

My new movie friend (you know who you are!) pitched this as ‘Four Weddings & a Funeral’. That sold it for me then and there! as it had been a while since I’d seen a good romantic comedy.

Unfortunately, (in my wee opinion) it was nothing close. It somehow, missed the mark – it was almost flat. There were lots of good things about it, 80’s music and setting, university life, varsity trivia competitions/ rivalry – finding yourself, James McAvoy (Last King of Scotland) – but none of these things quite worked together. It was odd – it should have worked but it didn’t! I noted that Tom Hanks produced this film along with BBC. Only the British can do their own films justice (greats like Hot Fuzz, 4 Weddings etc). Why is an American production company watering down the unique flare and humour that the British have – almost making it a ‘Made for TV movie’?

The only highlight of the movie was the ‘dope’ scene, but otherwise I laughed more in Transformers…..

Becoming Jane

In Chick Flick on May 27, 2007 at 6:29 am

I had great hopes for this movie. As a fan of all Jane Austen’s work (Pride & Prejudice, Sense & Sensibility), I expected this to be a factually wonderful and inspiring movie, about the author. However, I believe the director and screenwriter totally lost the Point of this entire biography and in the process alienated all Jane Austen fans (the target market!). What were they thinking!???

Firstly be warned. If you are expecting a feel-good, chick flick movie, don’t bother. This made me thoroughly bored and disappointed. Anne Hathaway, who is stunning in the ‘Devil wears Prada’ just fails terribly in this role. It would have been better suited to someone like a fresh new British actress (and with a complete script re-write!). Plus I didn’t like James McAvoy as the male love interest at all. Very mis-matched.

It is implied that without their illicit affair, Jane Austen would never have written her six great novels. We see Jane caught up in passion, bashing out the first draft of P & P (in a single night!, which is hardly realistic, if you’ve ever read the novel – it takes longer to read!). To me this movie feels just like just a fanciful piece of fiction rather than a biographical retelling.

I guess my low rating of this film is based on the feeling that I missed out on knowing the truth, what was her life was really like? Her struggles her achievements – I think that would have made a great film. If I had known it was not based on any historical fact – my expectations would have been alot lower and I think I may have enjoyed it more. However, I left feeling disappointed that I didn’t find out anything TRUTHFUL about this amazing woman.

Scoop

In Chick Flick on May 19, 2007 at 9:17 am

A light, whimsical comedy …

Woody Allen writes, directs and stars in this amateur mystery/ comedy. He stammers his way through the movie with his typical style of laughs. I’m a big fan of Scarlet Johansson (she is the most beautiful actress in Hollywood – my opinion) and she does the naive, aspiring journalist quite well.

There’s nothing much of substance really to this film, but it enjoyably plods along and ends well. I enjoyed Woody Allen’s previous film ‘Match Point’ more, but this film is still an enjoyable watch (but your partner may not agree!).

Steph’s rating: 7/10 (good, but not great)
IMDB plot review: A student journalist, for a college paper, visiting friends in contemporary London happens upon the scoop of a lifetime. Along the investigative trail, she finds magic, murder, mystery – and perhaps love, with a British aristocrat.

Music & Lyrics

Hugh Grant is one of my favourites. He is classic as the hip thrusting, 80’s popstar. I never got tired of watching him do his sad ‘Love Actually’ dance/ hip thrust/ jig! It just cracked me up every time. This chick flick is funny.

Drew Barrymore is in her element as the sweet, but love troubled, free spirit and her hippy clothes style in the movie are to die for!

Fantastic, light Friday viewing (and I did hear Wayne laugh quite a bit!)

Material Girls

In Chick Flick on December 16, 2006 at 12:20 am

IMDB gave this movie 1.7/10 which is pretty tough even for this genre. Sure this movie is totally marketed to a preteen, female audience who are already fans of Hilary Duff. But if you’ve seen the trailer you totally know what to expect and don’t set yourself up for high expectations.

The plot is basically weak and predictable. But I didn’t see this movie for the plot, I already knew from the trailers it would be average at best, I saw it for the clothes and because of Hilary!

Unfortunately the clothes and fashions were pretty average too! So unfortunately as far as chick flicks go this is a poor performer. But hey, it wouldn’t stop me from going to see another Hilary Duff movie in the future.

Steph’s review: 5/10 (Pretty low on the chick flick meter). The Holiday (see review below) is definitely my favourite and most outstanding chick flick of the season!

The Holiday

In Chick Flick on December 10, 2006 at 8:21 am

This movie had everything that I love about Chick Flicks. The Lido was showing Advance Screenings this weekend so I dragged Wayne along with me. Wayne’s constant groans were further confirmation that this was the best chick flick of all time.

I wish I was Kate Winslet! She is so cool in this movie. Jude Law is also perfectly cast as the romantic lead opposite the very likable Cameron Diaz. Who would have thought of Jack Black as romantic leading man either! Brillant. This movie is basically about two women with men-problems, until they swap homes in each other’s countries, where they each meet a local guy and find themselves! This movie has similar ‘Bridget Jones’ moments – but I love that tried and true formula.
This movie is one I could watch over and over again. It was 2 wonderful hours of romantic escapism. (Wayne is my very hot – Jack Black!) This movie makes me want to do a home exchange! I bet the demand for these will skyrocket as a result of this movie.

The Devil Wears Prada – Third Viewing

In Chick Flick on November 5, 2006 at 2:52 am

Third viewing enjoyed with Karlene and Julie, ‘long overdue girls time’ at St Lukes.

This movie really is a homage to haute couture fashion and after 3 viewings I still find more to love about this film! The movie’s stylist is amazing (Patrica Field – same lady who did Sex & The City). My personal top picks for fave outfits are below.

I especially love this first look, all black, amazing boots with the statement gold jewelry. This is the outfit is worn by Andy when she first meets Christian Thompson the author over a dangerous cocktail – stunning. But lets face it, they were all stunning!

I really enjoyed the second viewing. As the wit is quite fast paced, I caught a lot more this time round. Pus, I could study all the clothes ! In reflection I think the romantic quotient of the movie fits it perfectly and without the expectation that goes with any premiere – my enjoyment level of this movie keeps increasing.

The Devil Wears Prada

In Chick Flick on October 19, 2006 at 5:40 pm

Andy a sweet, young girl with big dreams, that gets the job from Hell. Except everyone is telling her how lucky she is! Anne Hathaway plays the part superbly, and Meryl Streep is extremely convincing as the evil boss. I’m sure this character will give lots of people flashbacks if they’ve ever had a bad boss.
This chick flick was a career-focused story rather than a romance based story line which is a nice change – but not convinced its the ultimate chick flick. One of the highlights of the film, is how they squeeze so many amazing clothes into the length of the film. All the clothes are beautiful and to die for…
I did miss the romantic plot being the main element of being a good chick flick in this movie, so my positive rating is based on it being wonderfully fashionista! Will see a couple more times at least.

John Tucker Must Die

In Chick Flick on October 1, 2006 at 8:45 pm

I think this movie is the best teen film since ‘10 Things I Hate About You’! Yes, high praise indeed!

I really enjoyed this movie. New and unknown actress, Brittany Snow was really great in her role as sweet Kate, with Sophia Bush and Ashanti as her conniving friends out to destroy John Tucker.

This film has the teen laughs, the predictable – enjoyable formula, great school – teen fashion. Very enjoyable movie! Although I could not persuade Wayne to see this movie with me, I think that most guys (20yrs or under) would probably enjoy this flick too. But this movie is definitely aimed at the female, teenage market – and it provides all the comedy, romance, that makes a great chick flick.

THE LAKE HOUSE

I was hesitant to see this movie as it looked an average romantic comedy. However I was pleasantly surprised that this chick flick was in the same high category as “You’ve Got Mail” and “Sleepless in Seatle”.I’ve read reviews where they criticised the plausibility of the context. Yay, first chick flick of the year that I really enjoyed!

This movie had a great supporting cast that were funny!

SJP and Matthew McConaughey were great. Di commented that she though SJP was getting a bit old and weathered to play the romantic lead and on thinking, I think she is right. SJP didn’t quite have that innocence of Kate Hudson.

The fashion element was great in this movie – SJP’s hair and clothes – so enviable.

Reese Witherspoon fantastic as always.

Was a bit reluctant because I’d seen trailers advertising this was a ‘ghost’ love story and I though that sounded a bit stink…but hey it worked and I was surprised by how cute this movie was and by how much I enjoyed it.

So-so Average!

Family drama, disguised as a chick flick! Prefer a classic chick flick without the drama. Missed the mark for me, which is a shame as I like SJP normally.

Claire Danes and Rachel McAdams (The Notebook) do well in this movie
